Calling all moms! Now that I have your attention, how many of you have chosen or desire MOTHERHOOD as a career? The definition of career is: an occupation or profession, especially one requiring special training, followed as one’s lifework: a person’s progress or general course of action through life or through a phase of life, as in some profession or undertaking. There is a wide field of labor opened before every mother and there are many positions to be held — a teacher, nurse, maid, cook, chauffeur, physician, singer, security guard —just to name a few. Hence, it appears by definition, MOTHERHOOD is definitely, without a doubt, a career, holding many positions. But how many women desire this profession, acquire the education and special training needed for it to become one’s lifework? Throughout Scripture, MOTHERHOOD is spoken of as a high and important calling. It comes with its little pleasures (children), yet it is also synonymous with servanthood.
Every day, women are called upon to selflessly meet the needs of their families. It is what GOD gave them time for. MOTHERHOOD is a great honor and privilege and has sacred responsibilities. “It is too true that mothers are not standing at their post of duty, faithful to their motherhood. God requires of us nothing that we cannot in His strength perform, nothing that is not for our own good and the good of our children.” — Adventist Home, p. 265.3. It is the mother’s work to train, to educate, and to discipline. While she seeks to store the mind of her child with useful knowledge, let her fortify the young heart with good principles.
MOTHERHOOD is not an easy job, but it’s definitely the best job a woman can hold. If her work is wrought faithfully, in the fear of God, it will bring forth fruit unto eternal life. “To a great extent the power to make her children what she desires them to be when they are grown to manhood and womanhood, is in the hands of the mother.….. Her work will not only prove a blessing to herself, but to the neighborhood, to society, and to the world. Her work will be immortalized in the presence of the family of God, and her name will be written in the books of Heaven as a missionary of the highest type.” — HR, July 1, 1889 par. 2.
